The Market Orientation, Operational Logic and Affecting Factors of For-profit Private Universities in Developed Countries

  • In terms of the market size of for-profit private universities in developed countries, the majority of for-profit private higher education institutions are in the form of two-year vocational and technical colleges. In the meantime, a small number of for-profit private universities offer masters and PhD programmes in the UK and the US. The development of for-profit higher education market is based on the concept of market-oriented public management, which provides diversified courses and vocational training for learners, adapts to the market development, employs a large number of part-time teachers, and pays less attention to scientific research. The main factors affecting the development of for-profit higher education are the degree of marketization, government's public policy and the sufficiency of the school-age population for higher education in the country.
